The year 2020 was defined by two things — a global pandemic and the greatest love story to ever grace our screens. Normal People was a runaway hit that launched the careers of Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal — for many of us, lockdown was defined by cutting our own fringes and lusting after chain necklaces. And although you might have thought we left the heartbreaking, addictive world of Normal People behind, four years later, the two stars have just teased a major update. It’s not confirmed yet, but it looks like the long-awaited Normal People season 2 might actually be happening.
The rumours of a second season began earlier this week when Edgar-Jones posted an Instagram story alongside her Normal People co-star, Paul Mescal. In the photo, the pair smiled at the camera holding up peace signs — or is that… the number two? “We got some news to share!!” she wrote in text over the photo, adding, “Watch this space.”

We don’t know for sure, but it certainly seems like a second season of Normal People could be in the works — and, naturally, fans are kind of losing it.

What happened in Normal People season 1?
If we really are getting a second season of Normal People, let’s have a quick refresher — what happened in the first season.
An adaptation of Sally Rooney’s beloved novel, the miniseries followed Marianne and Connell from their days as unlikely teen sweethearts to their time as an ill-fated couple in young adulthood.

Despite finally coupling up after years of misunderstandings, miscommunications and missed opportunities, their relationship didn’t end well. In the final scene, the pair decide to part ways — at least for now. Connell is heading off to New York to do an MFA in Creative Writing, while Marianne plans to remain in Dublin.

The gripping show lands tonight.
The final episode left us all in floods of tears — but at the time, there was a real sense of finality to the story. So… what would a second season be about?
What would happen in Normal People season 2?
We don’t know anything about the potential second season of Normal People yet, but we do know that there wouldn’t be any source material as Rooney never wrote a sequel to the novel. However, it would make sense for the show to pick up a few years down the line — perhaps we would catch up with Connell after his MFA is finished?
We’ll just have to wait and see — no matter what happens, we beyond ready for more microfringes and tiny little chains.
