Full, fluffy brows that you can feather-up and laminate in place are a defining trend of the 2020s, which may explain the appetite for finding eyebrow growth serums that work.
Not all of us are naturally #blessed with thick brows and many of struggle with sparse, thin areas. Throw in overzealous waxing, tweezing, over-plucking (anyone else a ’90s baby who bought into the skinny brow trend?), and you’ve got yourself a solid case for eyebrows that are in need of some proper TLC.

Do I really need a brow serum?
The short answer is no. “Eyebrow serums aren’t absolutely essential as there are effective alternatives such as brow pencils and microblading,” says Dr Sharon Wong, a hair specialist and consultant dermatologist based in London. “But,” she adds, “serums are an option and suitable for people who have eyebrow thinning or loss, provided that the follicles are not scarred or permanently damaged.”
“Whether you really need an eyebrow growth serum depends on your personal preferences and goals for your brows,” agrees Hoda Kiani, founder of LoveLash. “If you desire fuller, more defined eyebrows or have experienced eyebrow thinning due to factors like over-plucking, ageing, or medical conditions, an eyebrow growth serum may be worth considering.”
How do eyebrow growth serums work?
Similar to our lashes, brow hairs have their own growth cycle. Much like eyelash growth serums, eyebrow growth serums work by conditioning brow hairs and stimulating healthy hair growth. “They contain a range of ingredients which can be divided into two groups – actives that actually regrow hair and are typically medicines or drugs, and ingredients which condition and thicken existing hair, or a combination of the two,” explains Dr Sharon. “Eyebrow serums therefore work by either increasing hair growth and or making the most of the hair that is already there,” she adds. “These serums are applied directly to the eyebrows, where the active ingredients penetrate the skin and follicles to encourage thicker, stronger eyebrow hairs,” says Hoda.

How soon can I see results after using an eyebrow growth serum?
Typically, you should start noticing visible results as soon as you’re 3-4 weeks into using it on a daily and consistent basis. That said, the most impressive results should be visible after a minimum period of 8 weeks. “Unlike scalp hair, the growth cycle of brow hair is shorter, but it can still take up to 3 months to work and consistency is key,” says Dr Sharon. “It’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application and be patient with the process, as eyebrow growth often occurs gradually over time with regular serum use,” says Hoda. As for maintaining results, “if the product works you would need to continue using it as maintenance,” says Dr Sharon.
How to pick the right eyebrow growth serum
In terms of what ingredients to look for, eyebrow growth serums will commonly include keratin, vitamins (such as biotin and panthenol), botanical oils (like avocado, rosemary and castor), vitamin E and peptides, which are also found in lash serums.

“For growth, look for medicines like minoxidil and bimatoprost,” says Dr Sharon. Geeta Yadav, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Facet Dermatology, concurs. Keep an eye out for “prostaglandin or prostaglandin analog, like bimatoprost,” she says. “Or isopropyl cloprostenate, like you’d find in GrandeLash,” she adds. For conditioning, Dr Sharon recommends “biotin, vitamin E and pantothenic acid,” and for strengthening she rates amino acids and peptides.

How to apply eyebrow growth serums
The great thing about eyebrow growth serums is that despite their slightly differing consistencies and vastly different formulas, the process of applying them is fairly simple and, more-or-less, the same for every product. Before you start with any new product, it’s a good idea to do a patch test, then depending on the product you’re using, you’ll want to apply the instructed amount to your eyebrows and massage it using either an applicator brush or your fingers. Once it has enough time to dry and absorb into your hair follicles, you can continue with your regular skincare routine.
